Worthing Subbuteo club relaunch after lockout eased
A SUBBUTEO club brings people together after the pandemic … one shot at a time.
Worthing Fivestar TFC are a Subbuteo club that have been playing for 40 years and looking for people to join as they now re-launch lockdown restrictions have eased.
The Subbuteo game is a tabletop version of football in which players use their fingers to throw miniature football figures at the ball in order to hit it towards the goal.
The Worthing club struggled to function during the pandemic due to the proximity of people while they play.
However, due to the lockdown, there has been a resurgence of players finding old settings while spending more time at home.
Alan Lee, Vice President of the English Subbuteo Association and Member of the Worthing Fivestar TFC, said: “One of the things that we encourage with the English Subbuteo Association is the social aspect of the game.
“For us, the social part of the game, the popularity of the game has declined as the product and with the emergence of game consoles.
“I am a firm believer that people heal people, and this is something that we are really trying to push forward at the club, now we have relaunched.”
The English association Subbuteo has created five new clubs in the past year as the demand for retro gaming has increased.
Alan, 51, who started playing in the early 1980s, usually in Chelsea or Italy, said: “The nostalgia has always been there, that isolated time, everyone helped it.
“People who walk into their lofts and find old panini sets and stickers have really helped bring the sport back.
“I played regularly until I was 16 or 17 when I started doing other things. Since I came back to the sport three years ago, I love it.
“I drive two hours from Kent to participate in the Worthing club.”
Another reason Alan wants collectors who play the game themselves to join the club is the chance to meet Peter Upton, whom he described as a bible of Subbuteo knowledge.
Peter Upton, who is also a member of the Worthing Fivestar TFC and is well known in the Subbuteo community for his knowledge of the product and the sport.
