Salukis extends unbeaten streak to three with 1-1 draw against SIUE

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University tied the SIUE Cougars 1-1 after Liz Brechtel found the back of the net in the second half.

“We showed resilience in the second half and I felt at the end of the game that we were the better team,” said the head coach. Craig Robert said.

Neither team was able to get going offensively in the first half, with the Salukis and Cougars entering the second half scoreless.

The first goal of the game came in the 66th minute, with SIUE taking the lead after an SIU own goal that came from a corner and a group into the penalty area.

Brechtel responded quickly for the Salukis, taking a pass from Emma Spotack and scoring his equalizer in the bottom corner to make it 1-1 in the 69th minute. The assist was Spotak’s first of the season, and the goal was Brechtel’s second leading the team this year. In her last three games, Brechtel, the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, has scored twice and assisted once.

“She [Brechtel] is a great person,” Roberts said. “She’s a versatile player. Many players in our team played in different places tonight that we had to adapt to, and we showed the versatility of our growth.”

The Salukis came close to finding a late winner, but opposing keeper Taylor Spiller made a life-saving save to keep the game level.

SIU Goalie Maddy Alalouf allowed one goal and made three saves in 90 minutes played.

The tie was the Salukis’ first of the season, improving their record to 2-2-1 this year. Southern Illinois hits the road for its next game Sunday at 1 p.m. against Southeast Missouri State.
