Once upon a time there was a board game on Tijuana on the show “How I Met Your Mother”

Tijuana has appeared in several movies, TV shows, and even anime. And although the city itself does not appear on screen, it is mentioned in many productions. One of the shows that has hinted at Tijuana the most is the one starring Josh Radnor and Neil Patrick Harris: how I Met Your Mother.

During its nine seasons, Tijuana is mentioned several times. Let’s go back to all those times, good or bad, when this border town was mentioned:

1. When Lily’s dad makes a board game called “Tijuana Slumlord”

As true fans of this TV show know, Lily Aldrin’s father’s goal is to create the most popular board game and among his efforts there are Tijuana Slumlord. When he showed this game, Lily’s father had missed his ballet performance when she was a child. This is the 9th episode of the 5th season (5×09).

2. When we say that Robin has Tijuana in her purse

It is one of the saddest episodes of the series, since it occurs after the funeral of Marshall Erikson’s father in Minnesota. Here, the group of Ted, Robin, Lily, and Barney try to help Marshall and his family through a very difficult time, and each person in the group assigns themselves to a role. Robin calls herself the “vice-girl”, because she has pills, booze, and other suspicious things in her purse.

For this reason, Ted Mosby says she “stacked Tijuana in a purse”. Although this is not a very positive image of Tijuana, this stereotype has steadily improved over the years. This is the 14th episode of the 6th season (6×14).

3. At the school where Lily Aldrin works, there is a “Tijuana Tuesday”

In this episode, we find out that Lily’s high school ex-boyfriend, Scooter, is working alongside her at the same school. He is responsible for serving food to teachers and students. Marshall didn’t know this and after it’s revealed, he tells Lily that he has to tell Scooter, “We’ll never be together.” Lily says she’ll tell him that another day because she can’t mess up. “Tijuana Tuesday” for everyone at school.

This is the 16th episode of the 5th season (5×16).

4. Ted and the Sombrero Building

There is another possible reference. In the season finale “The Leap”, Ted Mosby designs a building in the shape of a sombrero (possibly in the form of the architecture of the Tijuana restaurant “El Potrero”;), which is starting to drive him crazy. In the end, those who hired him end up choosing a design from a Swedish architectural firm that made a dinosaur with a cowboy hat. This is the 24th episode of the 4th season (4×24).

Did you notice any of these references?
