As we anticipate every time the sixth edition of Dungeons & Dragons will come out, some are fed up with the classic system of D&D. Other tabletop role-playing games (or TRPGs) deserve love, too, after all! Maybe there are other projects worth picking up outside of the making of Wizards of the Coast?

Well if you are tired of Dungeons & Dragons, here are just a few of the many tabletop role-playing games you can get your teeth into.

Let’s start with Vampire: The Masquerade.

What would this list be without its title entry? Vampire: The Masquerade is a TRPG first released in 1991, published by White Wolf. You play as (who else?) A vampire and fight various enemies with your inner demons. Meet different clans, master different disciplines, and learn how to survive in such a cruel world.

Vampire: The Masquerade spawned a franchise full of spinoffs, the most famous being Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, a 2004 computer RPG that is considered one of the best video games of all time. A sequel is finally in development after all these years, and fans can’t wait to get their hands on it.

If you want a spicy horror monster experience, definitely check this one out. But let’s talk about one of the games that inspired Vampire: The Masquerade. . .

Still in a scary mood? Try Cthulhu’s Call!

Call of Cthulhu (also called CoC) is a TRPG released in 1981. It is based on the various fictional horrors of HP Lovecraft stories and takes place in a dark world infested with monsters that can take your sanity away. Can you raise the curtain and observe terrors beyond our dimension, while keeping your mind intact? Go find out, if you dare. . .

As Vampire: The MasqueradThis game also had several video games based on it, quite funny. Perhaps the best known is the game also called Call of Cthulhu, which was released at the end of 2018. There is even board games based on Call of Cthulhu role play, like Arkham Horror.

You play an ordinary person here, and the mystery element is very compelling. If this is your cup of tea, consider presenting Call of Cthulhu to your playgroup.

Okay, maybe all this talk about vampires and madness put us in a darker mood. So let’s brighten things up by talking about the uplifting tabletop role-playing game Overlight!

In this “kaleidoscopic fantasy”, a radiant force called “Overlight” gives hope after the world itself collapses, leaving seven continents hanging in the sky.

There are various fantastic races here with humans, and within those groups are the “Skyborn”. “Skyborn” people are born with glowing eyes, and although they are considered outcasts, they can naturally channel “Overlight”, using it to fuel abilities called “Chroma”. This is where your story begins: how will you use your powers and face the world around you?

HighlightingIt doesn’t play a little differently than most other TRPGs, and it may take some getting used to. Luckily, the Geek & Sundry YouTube channel has made several videos about the game if you’re confused, so don’t be afraid to check out their resources! So if you want a Game on the softer side, not as dark as Vampire: The Masquerade, definitely check this one out.
