As someone who’s only played one game of Warhammer 40,000 in my life, but watched several dozen more from the sidelines, a bit of beautifully modeled and painted terrain is just as compelling as it is. ‘a horde of tyranid or ork characters. One huge Warhammer fan has taken his love for the original real-time strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War to the next level, taking terrain models from the game and 3D printing them for his own tabletop battles.

Jay of Eons of Battle shared details on how he built his Dawn of War land on Youtube. He started out by taking his two favorite types of video game buildings, the Large Plasma Generator and the Large Fortress, and making cardboard models to help establish the scale. As an amateur voxel artist, I understand how difficult scale calculations are, not to mention having to adhere to the rules of Warhammer. Jay was forced to throw out pretty much most of his math because the video game operates at a different scale than the tabletop version, where height, width, and length can make or break many game-oriented strategies. ground.

Using 3D modeling software like Vectorworks and Blender, and later a 3D printer, Jay was able to not only model the terrain of Dawn of War, but also add a lot of man-made damage to each surface, selling his idea more than his field. fictional battle had seen generations of war between the Imperium of Man and the Orks.

“This land does not belong to anyone, my lord.”

A close-up of blood-red eyes pierced the camera as those first words were spoken. The camera slowly follows to reveal a face covered in soot as flames flicker in the background. The voice of a revolutionary delivers a burning indictment against colonization.

This 90 second teaser, directed by Anand Gandhi, is a perfect introduction to the world of SHASN: AZADI. Designed and produced by Zain Memon, AZADI is a board game about revolution and politics. Each player puts themselves in the shoes of a revolutionary, struggling to free their nation from the clutches of tyrannical imperial power as they relive and rewrite stories.

AZADI is a standalone expansion of SHASN – the hugely popular political strategy board game that has reintroduced India into tabletop games. SHASN creator Zain Memon has been a driving force in the country’s growing board game industry. This time around, newbie Abhishek Lamba, one of the region’s top emerging game designers, joins him at the designer table.

“Games are the future of storytelling. As a creator, games allow me to create personal lived experiences for gamers. With AZADI, I wanted the players to relive the greatest moments in history when democracy was born. And in doing so, better understand what it takes to protect our freedom, ”Zain shares.

This isn’t the first time Anand Gandhi has introduced disruptive creators to the world. AZADI is his latest release as a producer, adding to an impressive list of references, which includes the likes of Theseus ship, An insignificant man, Tumbbad, and Hotstar OK Computer.

“Our studio wants to facilitate the most exciting new creators, telling the most revolutionary stories. AZADI is the latest chapter in our ambition to share powerful media experiences that resonate with people around the world, ”said Gandhi.

Graphics aren’t everything, but they matter a lot, and if it weren’t for the continuous advancements in graphics technology, then there would still be games where the player has to “keep the green dot with your fantastic.” red square steering wheel ”, to quote GTA Vice CityHilarious radio commercial for the Degenatron game console.

RELATED: Older Video Games That Still Offer Amazing Graphics

And it’s not just a question of technology. Sometimes what is required is a game developer bold enough to put the time and effort into setting new visual standards. Where once it was about applying more colors and bigger sprites to the screen, it’s now about using sophisticated tools like render APIs and substance embedding as efficiently as possible. .

ten
Out of the race (1986)

Stage 1 on the original arcade game Out Run

Almost everything on Out of the game was revolutionary and unprecedented: its non-linearity, its soundtrack, its deluxe hydraulic arcade machine and, of course, those incredible graphics. Even today it’s beautiful to watch, which is not something that can be said about many games of the time, even some of the most popular.

The speed of its faux 3D world is still impressive, and its landscapes, while barren by today’s standards, are nonetheless atmospheric, iconic, and beautiful. And many of its details, such as the way the driver’s and passenger’s hair flutters in the wind, are truly timeless visual masterpieces.

9
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)

The area of Green Hill in Sonic The Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis

In the classic Nintendo vs. Sega war of the ’80s and’ 90s, Sega’s greatest strength was the speed at which its home machines were capable. Sega knew he would have a hard time competing with Nintendo’s Mario for design ingenuity, but one way to compete would be to make the legendary plumber look slow, slow, and old-fashioned.

And so Sonic the hedgehog, a remarkably colorful and fast-paced platform game, even by today’s standards, was born. And while he certainly didn’t replace Nintendo’s golden boy in the long run, its crisp, vibrant, faux 3D appearance made Mario look a bit quaint for a moment.

8
Star Fox (1993)

Star Fox on Super Nintendo

Star fox was a descendant of Star glider, which in turn was directly inspired by the 1983 Atari classic Star wars change machine. So it’s not at all a coincidence that Star Fox looks a lot like some Star warsmost iconic X-Wing sequences.

The smooth polygonal graphics of Star fox were so avant-garde that the SNES was not powerful enough to run the game without a little help, so each game cartridge had to be equipped with a Super FX graphics acceleration coprocessor. The results were truly revolutionary and ushered in a new era of 3D gaming.

7
Doom (1993)

three sergeants in the original DOOM

While the consoles of the day needed to be augmented in order to make 3D games run smoothly, the 3D revolution was already underway on PC, and the leader of the load was the seminal of id Software. Loss.

RELATED: Best Guns In The Game To Destroy Everything In Your Branch

Loss was so much more 3D than anything that came before. His environments had texture and verticality and atmospheric lighting, while his enemies were gruesome and aggressive and died with incredibly satisfying animations. Until 1993, PC games were only about strategy games, adventure games, and RPGs, but with incredible play, the PC suddenly became the number one platform for action games.

6
Final Fantasy 7 (1997)

Sephiroth surrounded by flames in Final Fantasy VII

RPGs were a lot like the tabletop games they evolved from. There were a lot of character sheets with lists of letters, words, and numbers. Some of them had nice visuals, but the graphics were generally not a priority. Players were supposed to use their imaginations, just like they did when playing D&D on the table.

Then Final fantasy 7 came up with. Three CD-ROMs filled with a whole new level of audiovisual richness, not just for RPGs, but for games in general. Some might argue that the painted FMV and static backgrounds don’t count as “graphics,” but how it all got mixed up with the game engine was part of what made Final fantasy 7 so mind blowing to watch.

5
Grand Tourism (1997)

replay mode in the original Gran Turismo

The same year as Final fantasy 7 demonstrated how the PlayStation could transport gamers to immersive otherworldly experiences like no other gaming machine before, Gran Turismo set new standards for visual realism.

It may look fuzzy and angular by today’s standards, but back then it absolutely lived up to its slogan “The real driving simulator”. The game featured 140 real cars with ultra-detailed driving physics and matching graphics. The race itself was great, sure, but just watching the reruns was fun in itself.

4
Shadow of the Colossus (2005)

Walk past a colossus in Shadow Of The Colossus

Before it was even remastered for the PS4, Shadow of the colossus was widely regarded as one of the most breathtaking games ever made. The art, animation and sense of scale are fantastic, but the graphics in this game offer more than just a feast for the eyes.

It’s a game with no dialogue, no text, no narrator, and almost no HUD, and yet it tells one of the most powerful stories in video game history. It is a masterpiece of visual storytelling and its sumptuous graphics are an integral part of this experience.

3
Crisis (2007)

an explosion in Crysis

Crisis was not so much a game as a huge tech demo. In 2007, Far cry creator Crytek had an extremely powerful new game engine, CryEngine 2, for sale, and what better way to show it off than to build a game that few PCs (and no consoles) of the time could run?

RELATED: The Best Games on High-End PCs

It was a bold move and a great game, but CrisisThe biggest achievement has been setting new technical standards, forcing all other AAA developers to catch up or look old-fashioned. And almost a decade and a half later Crisis could still be mistaken for a current generation game.

2
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

Geralt fights two guards in The Witcher 3

More than half a decade after its release, The Witcher 3 is still one of the most visually impressive games, especially on a high-end PC. RPGs thrive on both detailed minutiae and epic scale, and The Witcher 3 excels at both ends of the scale.

The witcherThe world of is breathtaking from afar and extremely accessible and tactile up close. This, combined with its excellent character models and top-notch animation, makes it one of the best examples of that old cliché, “a living and breathing world” that players have never seen.

1
Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

a sunset over the mountain in Red Dead Redemption 2

“Open World” might be a perfectly apt name for a genre of games in which the player is free to roam the environment, but no other game world feels as truly open as that of Red Dead Redemption 2.

And it’s not because of the number of square kilometers simulated by the game map. It’s because its stunning graphics create an incredibly authentic feeling of being in a wild nature on the border of a new world. Never has a game made sunset racing so real.

Previously, playing board games was a rainy day activity when all other plans failed.

But after the last two years of lockdowns and restrictions, many of us have had to find different ways to be entertained at home, which has sparked a resurgence of interest in table games.

The world of board games has changed dramatically in recent years, with an explosion of new games far removed from the classics we all know.

And Norwich entrepreneurs are taking note of their growing popularity, with several board game cafes opening around the city.

In 2018, Kieran Meenaghan used a seed loan from the University of East Anglia to launch the Games Table, a tabletop gaming cafe that opened in Anglia Square.

“I wanted to create an inviting space that would help shed a positive light on the tabletop game hobby,” he said.

“I knew firsthand the benefits of table games, they helped me read, write and add, and in my old career in the military, they helped me relax while deployed. “

Mr. Meenaghan moved the business to new premises in Lower Goat Lane in 2020 and now has a team of seven. It has over 350 board games to play in this difficulty range.

“Since we are a place, not just a cafe, we have a store that sells a variety of products. We also serve alcohol, soft drinks and coffee from Symposium Coffee Roasters, another veteran-owned business in the area. When it comes to food, we have a variety of snacks, but our main food comes from our collaboration with local businesses such as Mambo Jambo’s. “

He said the public is now looking for more than just a place to sit and eat or drink.

“Retail and hospitality places increasingly tend to offer an ‘experience,’ he said. “Board game cafes are a perfect fit for this future model.”

One of the first places to defend table games in the city was Athena Games. Jamie Grinstead, along with his mother and brother, opened Athena Games in August 2013. He moved from his original location on Bank Street to St Gregory’s Alley in 2015, occupying the former Kier Hardie Hall, where he has remained ever since. .

Mr. Grinstead, a video game enthusiast, decided to create a welcoming space for people to play table games after taking inspiration from similar places he visited on his travels in Europe.

Athena Games has become an important part of the Norwich gaming community, regularly hosting events that over 130 people have attended on certain occasions. It offers a range of hot drinks and snacks, and guests are welcome to bring food from other establishments nearby.

He sees no sign of slowing down in the growing popularity of gaming cafes.

“Board games provide this real human connection that you just can’t get from their digital counterpart. Board game cafes are a classic third space. atmosphere. Somewhere that isn’t work or home where you can just be yourself. “

On St Benedict’s Street there is also Slice and Dice, a board game cafe that also offers a menu of freshly cooked herbal dishes for patrons. Owner Samantha Whitehouse first tested the waters of her board game cafe through pop-ups in Norwich.

Following his success, he sought a permanent home. It finally opened on May 17 of this year, after a one-year wait due to delays caused by Covid.

Dust is an upcoming new table card game from Team Dustbiters, which actually features three video game industry veterans in the form of Terri Vellmann, Jan Willem Nijman, and Robbie Fraser. Vellmann is an illustrator and game designer known for titles like Heavy balls and Record room, and also already worked on another card game called Pushing kings. Nijman worked on Disk Room as well, and also on other iconic indie games like Nuclear throne and Minit, and is the only member of the team to ironically ride a bicycle instead of a car. Finally, Fraser is known for Broforce, an epic action game that’s a love letter to classic 80s and 90s movies.

Speaking of movies, Dust has roots firmly anchored in the themes and visuals of the Mad Max franchise, and Nijman even goes on to say that the turns of the card game can be reminiscent of stills of Mad Max: Fury Road. After all, Dust is a game with post-apocalyptic tones and full of unique looking cars, where players must try to leave the opponent without cards to win the game and escape the approaching sandstorm. Game Rant is talking to the Dustbiters team about this and more, including the game’s Kickstarter campaign.

Dustbiters: a fast-paced card game with strategic depth

Dust was first designed on the occasions most appropriate for its theme, and it was on a road trip that Nijman and Fraser took in 2016. Being game designers, they spent their evenings playing games. to a few games, but that quickly turned into making their own game, and the first idea they had was to do something like Rummikub and adapt it to become a single player dungeon crawler. Dust came into being soon after, and it was clear from the start that it would be a table game; something the team could do with just a pen and paper, and a break from video games.

For us, to fix a bug, you pick a sharpie and add something new to the text above the ugly paper map to test, then play it back. Fixing bugs on the computer is a whole other hell you have to dive into, so it was all very inspiring. —Nijman

Vellmann was brought on board shortly after that, especially through a conversation he had with Nijman, where the two decided that if they were to make a card game, they could do it together. Because the three of them were busy with their own jobs at the time, there was a mutual agreement to work on Dust whenever they could do it without worrying about deadlines, and that stress-free mindset carried over into the game as well. Dust is an extremely fast table game that offers an average fifteen minute session, with great potential for replayability.

It’s not a game that you have to set up, read the whole rulebook and have a lecture on how to play the game. After that it’s just a really fun, very quick [experience]. Things are spinning all the time. —Vellmann

Dust has a very short and simple rulebook unlike many other table games where players have to learn the basics for an hour or two, and it’s a conscious design choice. What the team wanted to achieve was a quick game that could be learned and explained in a matter of minutes, so that it could be played on the fly without investing too much in the abilities of each card, as they can also be quite simple.

There is still a lot of strategic depth to the game, with cars like the Mind Manipulator, which allows players to use the ability of any enemy car in the field. At the end of each turn, the car that is furthest behind in the conversation is ultimately destroyed by the sandstorm, which means players have to decide what moves to take and whether to let one of their cars move forward or the let be destroyed. . Globally, Dust is a fun game designed to be a lighter alternative to other table games, and it’s all about cars, which means no dice or tiles.

Dust is slated for release in November 2021 for Kickstarter contributors.
