Big South recognizes Gardner-Webb student-athletes at spring meetings
HILTON HEAD, SC — Gardner-Webb honored five student-athletes at the Big South Conference’s annual awards banquet Wednesday night during the league’s spring meetings.
Meetings are taking place this week at the Westin Resort on Hilton Head Island.
The trio of Jonathan Frie, Faith Parandhamaia and Louise Schmidtgen received the George A. Christenberry Award, which is presented annually to the league’s student-athletes who achieve the highest GPA during their undergraduate college career.
Gardner-Webb’s anna fisher received the Bob McClosky Insurance Graduate Scholarship and Jennifer Escalera received the Sunbelt Rentals scholarship.
Frye, who majored in biology/biomedical sciences at Gardner-Webb, Parandhamaia, who majored in business management, as well as Schmidtgen, who majored in international business/computer science, all graduated respective undergraduates with perfect cumulative GPAs of 4.0.
The Big South Conference Graduate Scholarship Program was established by the league in the fall of 2005 to recognize academic excellence by Big South Conference student-athletes who intend to pursue higher education. postgraduate after graduating from a Big South Conference institution.
Fish has started all 48 competitions she has played at Gardner-Webb since joining the team in 2019 and has recorded 4,183 minutes of career action. She helped the Runnin’ Bulldogs reach the Big South Women’s Soccer Championship game in 2019, in addition to recording an assist in the 2021 spring season against Charleston Southern. Fish will pursue her master’s degree in physiology at North Carolina State University in the fall.
The Sunbelt Rentals Deep South Scholarship Program for Minorities, Women and Veterans has been with the league for 14 years. The scholarship is awarded to students entering their final semester as undergraduates at a member institution in the Deep South.
Escalera is a redshirt sophomore distance runner with Gardner-Webb Track & Field and Cross Country. The Rutherfordton, North Carolina native competes in the 1,500-meter, 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter track events for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. She has raced in each of the last two Big South Conference Cross Country races.
Gardner-Webb has been a full member of the Big South Conference since 2008.
